IIIII DVSONOFPHLOLOGYANDLTERATUREEASTERNFaculty MembersIndological studies is an academic discipline centered on the careful reading and interpretation of texts preserved in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. The oldest of these Sanskrit texts is the Ṛgveda, a collection of over ten thousand hymns dedicated to various deities. For millennia, this vast body of verse has been transmitted orally, with each generation committing it to memory with absolute precision. This rigorous method of transmission, which permitted not even the slightest deviation in sound, has preserved these texts as a linguistic and cultural treasure trove that refl ects the language of several thousand years ago. Th e Sanskrit language is famously complex and diffi cult, but with dedicated study, one gains the key to unlocking this immense treasure. What follows is an entry into the profound world of Indian thought and culture. The classical literature of India includes not only religious texts but also epic poetry such as the Mahābhārata, philosophical treatises, drama, and literary works of great beauty and variety. India is also known for its contributions to medicine, such as Āyurveda, and to mathematics, including the fi rst known articulation of the concept of zero. All of these belong to the fi eld of Indological studies. Engaging with the philosophies behind these works can also off er profound refl ections on the nature of the self, the cosmos, and the origins of spiritual traditions found across Asia, including Japan.Japan’s scholarship in Indology has held a leading position internationally. The meticulous and sustained eff orts of Japanese scholars in reading and interpreting complex Sanskrit texts have yielded research that is recognized and referenced globally. While Indology remains a so-called “minor fi eld” with relatively few specialists, this also means that scholars have the opportunity to pursue unique, cutting-edge research and to become leading experts on the world stage.❶ A view of our research room, which we share with the Buddhist Studies department.
